Areas of operative focus

01
Head & Neck Surgery

Dr Buchanan's primary operative focus is head and neck surgery, supported by advanced fellowship training in surgical oncology. He manages both benign and malignant conditions of the head and neck — including thyroid, parathyroid, parotid, and cutaneous disease. He is a Member of the Australian and New Zealand Head & Neck Cancer Society.

02
Rhinology & Nasal Surgery

Structural nasal surgery and endoscopic sinus work require technical precision and a thorough understanding of anatomy. Dr Buchanan manages septoplasty, functional rhinoplasty, and functional endoscopic sinus surgery with attention to long-term functional outcome.

03
Paediatric ENT

Dr Buchanan manages the full scope of paediatric otolaryngology, including ear disease, adenotonsillar pathology, airway problems, and sinonasal conditions in children. He works with anaesthetists experienced across the full spectrum of paediatric ages. He believes collaboration with families is an integral part of paediatric care.

04
General ENT

Ear, nose and throat care for adult patients, encompassing voice disorders, salivary gland pathology, and thyroid disease. Each presentation is evaluated on its own terms. Dr Buchanan has a limited practice in adult ear conditions; patients seeking care for adult ear problems are welcome to make contact and he is happy to direct them to appropriate colleagues where needed.

Training the next generation of surgeons

Dr Buchanan holds appointments at three Melbourne public hospitals, contributing to the formal training of ENT surgical registrars across tertiary and metropolitan settings. This work is taken seriously — the same standards expected in elective practice apply in public hospital operating theatres, where trainees are observing and learning.
